Why Homebased Education?
There are as many different reasons for home-based learning as there are families doing it. Many parents are simply continuing a lifestyle that is family centered. At home it is also possible to structure education to the individual needs of the child with one on one support. Home-based learning allows parents to provide the guidance they believe their children need in order to become responsible, contributing adults.
Learn more about home education in Alberta:
- Read the Home Education Regulation.
- Read the Home Education section of the Policy on page 36.
- Information on Funding (pages 23, 24, and 26).
- Talk to different school boards that support home education to learn how they differ from each other, and what they can offer your family. Ask them what their requirements are regarding educational planning, supervision and funding. You can find these through on-line searches, or refer to HLSA's list of alternative school boards.
- Research, research, research! There is a wealth of information at the public library, our HLSA library, on the internet and on the world wide web. You will quickly see that when it comes to homebased education, there are many, many different methods and philosophies. You are sure to find something that interests you.
- Join a local support group, like HLSA! We are independent of any school board and you can find support and information from other families who have home-based learning experience.
